Timo Feldhaus: How has the way you work changed since your child was born? Or, to put it in neoliberal terms: Does having a child result in any advantages for your work? Isabelle Graw: I was a so-called older mother, to use the stigmatizing term, and the way I worked had already changed in the years leading up to pregnancy in that I was consciously trying to overcome the workaholism of my earlier days. Although I also have to concede at this point that I had managed by my early forties, thanks to tenured professorship and my journal being more…

Michael Govan, the director of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, in front of Chris Burden’s “Urban Light.”Credit…Emily Berl for The New York TimesLOS ANGELES — Michael Govan stood in a third-floor gallery scattered with paintings and crates at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, his arms gesturing at blank white walls, his face furled in thought. Jeff Koons plays with ideas of taste, pleasure, celebrity, and commerce. “I believe in advertisement and media completely,” he says. “My art and my personal life are based in it.” Working with seductive commercial materials (such as the high chromium stainless steel of his “Balloon Dog” sculptures or his vinyl “Inflatables”), shifts of scale, and an elaborate studio system involving many technicians, Koons turns banal objects into high art icons. His paintings and sculptures borrow widely from art-historical techniques and styles; although often seen as ironic or tongue-in-cheek, Koons insists his practice is earnest and optimistic. “I’ve always loved Surrealism…

Gerhard Richter is known for a prolific and stylistically varied exploration of the medium of painting, often incorporating and exploring the visual effects of photography. “I like everything that has no style: dictionaries, photographs, nature, myself and my paintings,” he says. “Because style is violent, and I am not violent.” In the early 1960s, Richter began to create large-scale photorealist copies of black-and-white photographs rendered in a range of grays, and innovated a blurred effect (sometimes deemed “photographic impressionism”) in which portions of his compositions appear smeared or softened—paradoxically reproducing photographic effects and revealing his painterly hand. With heavily textured…
